Although it has other applications, we most often use copywriting in marketing and advertising. A good copywriter must be able to write in a way that conveys information clearly and persuasively. It’s not easy, but with practice it can become second nature. Let’s talk about some ways to become a confident copywriter.

What is a copywriter?

A copywriter is a writer like any other. But they’re hired to write advertising text. In some cases, the copywriter is also the art director or graphic designer.

Some copywriters have degrees in English, journalism, or writing but it’s not required. In order to be a good copywriter, someone must be able to think creatively and critically about their message. They must also be skilled in grammar and spelling.

Why is copywriting important?

Copywriting can be intimidating, but it’s an essential skill for every marketer. The words you choose to use in your marketing materials can make or break your brand.

The key to copy that really persuades and engages your audience is knowing your goal and starting with that in mind. Clear, succinct language will give them what they need without any excess fluff. And don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re not sure about something! It’s okay not to know everything when you’re just starting out and there are plenty of resources available to teach you the ropes.

Understanding how to communicate information in an interesting way is the key skill for any copywriter. You can produce a number of different style options, but ultimately it’s about what you believe your audience wants to hear.

Copywriting can be tough work. Writing an email, post, or other content for your audience can feel like trying to write poetry while wearing boxing gloves. But with time and practice, it can become second nature.

How to become a confident copywriter

Avoid jargon and use strong language

People are often tempted to write in jargon, but doing so only confuses the reader.

Instead, use simple language that your readers can understand. Plain speech might not be as eloquent as some writers prefer, but it is more effective. Strong language will also help readers understand your message better.

It’s tempting to include jargon or complicated words in your copywriting because you want to sound like an expert. But this is counterproductive because it forces the reader to focus on understanding you instead of what you’re trying to say. They won’t be convinced or even tempted to buy if they have to click away from your copy to look up what every other word means.

If you need help with finding strong words, look up synonyms on the internet or ask a friend. You can also find lists of strong words online; for example, there are sources that list words that elicit positive emotions and then others with words that evoke negative emotions.

Break up text into manageable chunks

Your copy should be easy to read. It’s tempting to pack information onto one page, but it will just be too difficult for your reader to absorb everything. Instead, break up text into chunks so that readers can understand the message more easily. You want your content to be on point and informative without overwhelming readers.

This also makes it easier for you to present the information in a logical order. Break down what you’re trying to say into smaller sections so that readers can follow along with ease. This will make it easier for them to parse through your message and process the important pieces of information.

You may want to use subheads or bullet points throughout your text as well. They help guide readers through your message and keep them engaged with what you’re trying to say. They can also help readers skim the content more quickly when they’re in a hurry and looking for that one specific piece of information.

Ask for help when needed

There are many resources that offer help with writing. If you’re struggling, reach out to someone who has experience with copywriting.

It’s sometimes difficult to tell when you need help understanding something, but it’s important to be able to admit when you’re struggling and ask for assistance.

For example, if you’re writing an advertisement for a product and you aren’t sure what the key features are, take a break from your work. You can always come back to it later or ask someone for help so that you have all the information necessary to complete the task.

Know when to endure and when to expand

We all want to be good at everything but there comes a point when we need to admit it’s just not worth it. You need to know when to endure and keep trying to write your own copy and when to expand your team and hire a copywriter to handle it for you.

There are great reasons to endure, such as:

  • Having most of the content written and just needing to finish up some minor details
  • Having no budget to outsource your content creation
  • A deep and abiding love of writing

But there are also great reasons to expand and hire a copywriter, such as:

  • Not knowing what to write or how to write it
  • Having little or no time to write content
  • A lack of interest in writing your own content
  • Having other work that is more important than writing
